Kaitlyn Larew

Mathematics Education

Kaitlyn Larew began her undergraduate career as an Elementary Education major at Providence College, but after a year of taking upper level mathematics courses, she realized secondary math education was the career she truly wanted. She transferred to the University of Connecticut to pursue her degree in mathematics. There, she had the opportunity to tutor students at Mansfield Middle School, which solidified her desire to work with adolescents.

Ms. Larew completed her student teaching at Norwich Free Academy, where she taught Geometry, Plane Geometry, and two sections of Functions and Trigonometry. During this time, she developed differentiated lessons, implemented technology in the classroom, and experimented with the use of cooperative group activities. Ms. Larew was pleased to have the opportunity to work with a large, diverse population of students during her time at Norwich Free Academy. She also had the opportunity to substitute for two math teachers for one and two week time periods, and continues to learn different strategies used to teach mathematics effectively.

During the spring of 2015, Ms. Larew had an internship at Windham High School. She worked with another member of her cohort to develop a Bioinformatics course, which will be implemented in the 2015-2016 school year. Ms. Larew is excited to begin her teaching career, and to continue to hone her craft.
